Understanding Gibbs Free Energy Conceptually

Postby Nathan Sanchez 1F » Sun Jan 29, 2017 6:31 pm

What exactly do the numbers mean when I'm calculating Gibbs Free Energy? I know that it is used to determine the spontaneity of a reaction, but what is it fundamentally as opposed to what it's used for? Why is a negative change in Gibbs free energy spontaneous?

Conceptually, Gibbs free energy is a thermodynamic potential that describes the system.
