### Understanding Gibbs Free Energy Conceptually

What exactly do the numbers mean when I'm calculating Gibbs Free Energy? I know that it is used to determine the spontaneity of a reaction, but what is it fundamentally as opposed to what it's used for? Why is a negative change in Gibbs free energy spontaneous?
