requirements for reversible reactions

Postby Melissa Per 2J » Sun Feb 04, 2018 11:20 pm

Do delta G and delta S total both have to be equal to zero for a reaction to be reversible? Why or why not?

Delta S would have to be zero because otherwise heat would be lost to the surroundings. If heat is lost to the surroundings, the reaction cannot be reversed. Delta G would have to be negative, indicating a release in energy. This means that the products will have lower energy than the reactants, therefore, the reaction would be spontaneous because systems favor lower energy states.
