$\Delta G^{\circ}= -RT\ln K$

$\Delta G^{\circ}= \sum \Delta G_{f}^{\circ}(products) - \sum \Delta G_{f}^{\circ}(reactants)$

I know that a reaction with a negative deltaG is spontaneous, but what exactly does it mean to be spontaneous?

The book defines spontaneous change as "change that has a tendency to occur without being driven by an external influence." Essentially a spontaneous reaction doesn't require an additional input of energy to occur. It's important to remember that just because it is spontaneous doesn't mean it will react rapidly or that it will even happen at all--it just has the ability to occur.
