Gibbs Free Energy Signs

Postby Beatrice Petelo 1F » Sun Feb 17, 2019 12:14 am

What are the signs for gibbs free energy for both spontaneous and non-spontaneous reactions?

a negative gibbs free energy means that it is spontaneous. A postive gibbs free energy means that it is not spontaneous.

Negative ∆G means the forward reaction is spontaneous. Positive ∆G means the forward reaction is not spontaneous, but the reverse reaction is. If ∆G equals 0, that means the system is in equilibrium.

Negative = Spontaneous
Positive = Non-Spontaneous

When K=1, Gibbs free energy will =0.
When K<1, Gibbs free energy will be + and will result in a non spontaneous reaction.
When K>1, Gibbs free energy will be - and will be a spontaneous reaction.
