Do gases have a - delta G value because they are typically spontaneous?

It depends what you are referring to when you say "gases." Delta G values are used to show the difference of the Free Energy before and after a reaction has occurred. Gases can take part in reactions that have a positive or negative Delta G.

If you look at the list of thermodynamic data in appendix 2a you'll find that most compounds have a negative delta G (formation), not only gases.

I believe the negative delta g that we typically see when deaing with gases is due to the fact that the entire process is spontaneous.
