## Gibbs concept

$\Delta G^{\circ}= \Delta H^{\circ} - T \Delta S^{\circ}$

$\Delta G^{\circ}= -RT\ln K$

$\Delta G^{\circ}= \sum \Delta G_{f}^{\circ}(products) - \sum \Delta G_{f}^{\circ}(reactants)$

Is gibbs basically the total change in enthalpy and entropy of a system?

Gibbs is the free energy of a system that is available to do work. Delta G is the change of free energy that is equal to the delta H (change of enthalpy) minus the product of temperature and delta S (the change of entropy).

Gibbs relates to the enthalpy, entropy, and temperature of a reaction in the equation for Gibbs free energy given in lecture. Conceptually, Gibbs free energy tells you if a reaction is spontaneous if the value you get for delta G is negative. The delta G value can also be used to solve for other elements in the equation if that is known and another element is unknown.

Can someone explain what is happening on a physical level when deltaG = 0 (the Gibbs free energy is at equilibrium)?

The reaction has reached equilibrium, so neither reaction is more favored over the other. Therefore no net energy is available to be used to drive the forward or reverse reaction.

The reaction is at physical equilibrium, and most likely going through a phase change.

Gibbs is the amount of useable free energy. So this is the total change in the energy minus the temperature times the total change in disorder of the system.
