When to Use Certain Equations

Postby Labiba Sardar 2A » Sun Feb 16, 2020 11:26 am

What's the difference between the equations ΔGr = ΔG° + RTlnQ and ΔGr = -RTlnK? To elaborate, when are you supposed to use one over the other?

The second equation is relating to deltaG when the reaction is at equilibrium. The first equation is used when the reaction is still unstable, or favors one side over another.

The first equation is used when the reaction is not at equilibrium and there is some reaction quotient Q that is not equal to K whereas the second reaction assumes that the reaction has reached equilibrium and Q=K.
