## Gibb's Free Energy

$\Delta G^{\circ}= \Delta H^{\circ} - T \Delta S^{\circ}$

$\Delta G^{\circ}= -RT\ln K$

$\Delta G^{\circ}= \sum \Delta G_{f}^{\circ}(products) - \sum \Delta G_{f}^{\circ}(reactants)$

### Gibb's Free Energy

What exactly is Gibb's Free Energy? What is it calculating?

### Re: Gibb's Free Energy

Gibb's Free Energy is energy available to do work in reaction. It's different from other energy functions (like enthalpy) because it takes energy loss due to entropy into account, since real work is not 100% reversible.
It's mainly used to tell If a reaction is spontaneous.

Conceptually, I think it may be most important to think about Gibb's Free Energy as a convenient state function used to determine whether a reaction will proceed spontaneously. As previously stated, it is a measure of energy available to do work in a system.

### Re: Gibb's Free Energy

Gibbs Free Energy is the most accurate way of measuring whether a reaction will be spontaneous. If it's negative, the reaction is spontaneous. If it's positive, the reaction isn't spontaneous.

### Re: Gibb's Free Energy

Gibbs Free Energy is the amount of thermodynamic potential energy available to do work. The equation for it is usually used to determine the energetics of a system, such as if it is spontaneous (Negative deltaG) or not.

Can one actually calculate amounts of G contained in a substance, or only transferred amounts?

This refers to the energy available to do work.

### Re: Gibb's Free Energy

Gibbs Free Energy is the amount of free energy available to do work. It is a state function, so only the initial and final amounts matter.
