Free Energy and Work

What is the relationship between free energy and work? This is one of the learning objectives from Thermodynamics.

Im pretty sure that if there is a free expansion, work equals zero because the system does not have to counteract a compressive force

Free energy is the energy that is available to do work.

From what I understand, the free energy is the amount of energy that is available to do work. When talking about energy, energy can be in the form of heat, friction ext. Free energy is by definition solely the amount of energy available to do work in a system. I hope this helps!

The released free energy is the maximum amount of energy that can be used as work. In reality, it can't all be perfectly utilized, but we calculate it that way.

Free energy is the maximum amount of energy from a system that can be used to perform useful work, in other words, work not associated with the expansion of a system.
