why is the splitting of a halogen assumed to be an endothermic reaction in this question?

This is because endothermic means a process or reaction that absorbs energy in the form of heat. To break a bond would require heat to be inputted as a reactant

When the halogen is split, heat is required to break the bond, so it is an endothermic reaction.
