Multiplicity/States

Can someone explain what multiplicity is and how to apply this concept to equations? Or rather when you would know to use muliplicity?

Multiplicity is the number of times a particular value appears in a set. So in the context of equations, multiplicity is used to describe the number of times a specific solution or root appears. Take a chemical reaction, for example, if a certain molecule can react in multiple ways to produce different products, each pathway's multiplicity would indicate how many times that product is formed.
