Vant Hoff's equation

Postby jordanginyard_ » Fri Feb 05, 2021 1:22 am

I know Vant Hoff's equation is used to calculate K at different temperatures, what else do we need to know?

You would probably need to know the two temperatures (T1 and T2) and maybe one of the Equilibrium constants (K1 or K2). Also you might want to know the conceptual understanding of what the equation would look like when the reaction is exothermic or endothermic. Reference to page 433 in the Textbook.

The Van't Hoff Equation can be used to calculate K at different temperatures if delta H is known.

Since dG=-RTlnK and dG=dH-TdS, then dH-Tds=-RTlnK, and then you can manipulate the equation to look like ln(K1/K2)= - (dH/RT2) + (dH/RT1)

It can also be used to calculate for delta H if you know both of the Ks and the temperatures they got with!

To calculate K at a different temperature using Van't Hoff equation, you need to know the value of K at some other temperature as well as the delta H for that reaction.

You would also need to know the two temperatures and the equilibrium constants themselves (depending on the version you are using). Knowing delta H would also be useful.

For Vant Hoff's you can find the K value at different temperatures to find change in enthalpy, or manipulate equation depending on information given. Can find delta H given two temperatures and their corresponding K values.
