Entropy/W

Postby 405996618 » Fri Feb 16, 2024 5:19 pm

For question 4G.5 in the textbook, can someone explain how we are suppose to know that the W is 12^(6.02x10^23) for the cis, and 3^(6.02x10^23) for the trans?

The determination of W relies on the number of energetically equivalent microstates accessible to each isomer at a given energy level, reflecting the potential arrangements of particles within the system. The discrepancy in the base values, 12 for cis and 3 for trans, likely stems from the differing degrees of freedom or possible arrangements inherent to their respective molecular structures, which manifest in the calculation of entropy and the resulting W values. Therefore, the distinctive symmetries and arrangements characteristic of the cis and trans isomers leads to the specific exponentiated values utilized in the calculation, delineating the microstate multiplicities of each isomer as per statistical mechanics principles.
