Incomplete Combustion

Postby SarahOMalley1D » Mon Jan 31, 2022 9:56 am

Hi! In Outline 3, we are told to know the environmental impacts of burning fossil fuels. I know that ethanol is a more environmentally friendly fuel source than fossil fuels because it ensures complete combustion, but what does complete combustion mean? How do fossil fuels incompletely combust?

Happens because of a lack of O2, and CO is poisonous

Checking for Complete Combustion. Fossil fuels contain carbon (C) and hydrogen (H). During complete combustion carbon and hydrogen combine with oxygen (O2) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). During incomplete combustion part of the carbon is not completely oxidized producing soot or carbon monoxide (CO).

Most fossil fuels are incomplete combustions which create carbon monoxide. That's why we have carbon monoxide alerts by furnaces or any source that burns fossil fuels.

All I know is that incomplete combustion results in CO (Carbon Monoxide). das it.

During complete combustion, CO2 and H2O is produced from carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. During incomplete combustion, only CO is produced.

Fossil fuels do not completely combust because part of the carbon is not completely oxidized producing carbon monoxide. The complete combustion of ethonal produces CO2

So in complete combustion, CO2 is produced and in incomplete combustion the carbon is not complete oxidized and results in CO. What other fuels result in incomplete combustion?
