Outside Examples

Postby Giacomo Carter 2D » Sun Feb 12, 2023 10:42 pm

Are there any examples from the world outside of biology where the laws of thermodynamics are applied?

Hello there! Since it is a law of science it naturally applies to all things in the observable universe. Examples include plants, animals, plants, galaxies, food, the sun, technology, and more. It is not just limited to biology. Hope this helps!

I think it's near impossible to think of places where laws of thermodynamics aren't present.
A fun one is when you inflate a balloon, work is being done because the system is changing volume (at near constant pressure too, due to the elasticity of the balloon), thus internal energy is changing

Anytime heat, work, or entropy is changed, an example of thermodynamics has occurred, so it happens more often than we think. One example that we’ve likely all experienced before is taking a hot shower after a cold, rainy day. When you feel cold and shower under hot water, heat energy will spontaneously transfer from the hotter object (water and steam) to the colder object (you), allowing you to feel warm when you shower. The evaporation of the water into steam is also another example.

When you exercise, and you get really hot, it is because your body is performing a series of exothermic reactions that are thus releasing enthalpy in order to use energy. This is a biological example of thermodynamics.
