Memorizing Reduction and Oxidization
I know that Oxidation is a loss of electrons and reduction is a gain of electrons but does anyone know a rhyme or something you guys say to help you memorize it better?

OIL RIG! Oxidation Is Losing, and Reduction Is Gaining (electrons). Hope this helps!
Re: Memorizing Reduction and Oxidization
I remember it as OIL RIG, which stands for Oxidation is loss (of electrons), Reduction is gain. I think Lavelle introduced a different abbreviation but I forgot what it was... hope this helps!

I use OIL and RIG! (oxidation Loses electrons)
Reduction Gains electrons
Reduction Gains electrons

Another one we discussed in lecture was "LEO the lion says GER."
LEO = Loss of Electrons is Oxidation
GER = Gain of Electrons is Reduction
LEO = Loss of Electrons is Oxidation
GER = Gain of Electrons is Reduction

Re: Memorizing Reduction and Oxidization
Hello, in addition to all of these great tips, I find it really helpful to remember what happens to the ions themselves when they undergo an oxidation or reduction reaction. For instance, in an oxidation reaction, an ion will become more positive. In a reduction reaction, they will become more negative. I hope this tip helps you as well!

Re: Memorizing Reduction and Oxidization
Oil Rig is probably the most common acronym in order to memorize that oxidation is the loss of electrons and reduction is gaining electrons. Oxidation is Loss (OIL) and Reduction is gain (RIG).

Re: Memorizing Reduction and Oxidization
OIL RIG would be my best method, but I also think about how reducing something means it would be less or negative. So if it is becoming more negative it is getting more negative electrons. I remember that and how oxidation is just the opposite of that.

Re: Memorizing Reduction and Oxidization
OIL RIG is probably the most common acronym to remember oxidation and reduction:
OIL (Oxidation is Loss of e-)
RIG (Reduction is Gain of e-)
OIL (Oxidation is Loss of e-)
RIG (Reduction is Gain of e-)

OIL RIG!!! Oxidation Is Losing (electrons), and Reduction Is Gaining (electrons)

Re: Memorizing Reduction and Oxidization
The best method of remembering is OIL RIG! Oxidation is the loss of an electron, which happens at the anode, and Reduction is the gaining of an electron, which happens at the cathode.
