Redox Reactions

Postby Maya Schnall 3J » Fri Jan 29, 2016 7:26 pm

Does anybody know of any pneumonic device or anything else to help me remember the cathode's role vs the anode? I always seem to mix them up.

Hi, My high school teacher taught me the pneumonic, "Red Cat and An Ox" so reduction cathode and anode oxidation. I still remember it even today, so hopefully that helps you remember!

Also, reduction and cathode both start with consonants and anode and oxidation both start with vowels

In addition to "Red Cat, An Ox" to remember the roles of the anode and cathode, you can also remember "OIL RIG" to remember that Oxidation Is Loss (of electrons) [OIL] and Reduction Is Gaining (of electrons) [RIG].
