Balancing Cell Reactions

Can someone explain to me when you would have to reverse a half reaction and why do you reverse it?

As far as I know, you would have to reverse a half reaction if it is the oxidation reaction because the values used to calculate cell potential would be standard reduction potential, and this would be reversed for oxidation. Also, the electrons on each side of the equation need to cancel out when adding the two half reactions together, so one of them would have to be reversed.
