Potential difference vs. cell potential

Postby Katie Clark 3B » Sat Feb 06, 2016 3:53 pm

Can someone explain what potential difference actually is? Not the formula, but the definition. And what is the difference between potential difference and cell potential?

Cell Potential is the measure of how much voltage exists between two cells. Potential difference, however, is not a measure, but it's what happens due to the ability of electrons to flow from one half cell to another. Basically, potential difference is what occurs when electrons move between electrodes because of a redox reaction. Hope that helps!
