Pneumonic Device

Here is a useful pneumonic device to help you associate reduction with gaining electrons and oxidation with losing electrons:

Reduction--> reducing (positive) charge (therefore e-s must be gained in the process)

Therefore, Oxidation--> loses e-s (by process of elimination)

The mnemonic device I always used was OIL RIG

OIL = Oxidation is loss [of electrons]
RIG = Reduction is gain [of electrons]

Red Cat- Reduction at the Cathode
An Ox- Oxidation at the anode
