Balance the skeletal equation by using oxidation and reduction half-reactions. All the reactions take place in basic solution. Identify the oxidizing agent and reducing agent in each reaction.

d)Reaction of elemental phosphorus to form phosphine, PH3, a poisonous gas with the odor of decaying fish:
P4(s)-->H2PO2- (aq) + PH3(g)

Half rxns:

12e- + 12H2O + P4 --> 4PH3 + 12OH- Reduction (multiplied by 4)
8OH- + P4 --> 4H2PO2- +4e- Oxidation (multiplied by 12)

48H2O + 16P4 + 96OH- --> 16PH3 + 48H2PO2 + 48OH-

Divide the equation by 16

3H2O + P4 + 3OH- --> PH3 + 3H2PO2-

See pages 563-568 in the textbook - it describes step by step how to balance redox reactions in acidic/basic conditions.
