Cathodes and Anodes

Postby ERIKTORRESDisc3C » Sun Feb 05, 2017 1:22 pm

I have been doing problems for electrochemistry and I am having difficulty knowing which of the redox reactions to name as the cathode or anode. Could someone please provide me with the reasoning behind how to identify which element as cathode or anode??

Cathode is where reduction takes place (gaining electrons). Anode is where oxidation takes place (loss of electrons). Reduced species is the cathode, oxidized species is the anode. Electrons flow from anode to cathode. ca(+)hode = + electrons. anode = - electrons.
