Redox reactions

Postby Adam_Alyafaie_1L » Mon Feb 06, 2017 9:12 pm

For number 3 on the chapter 14 book problems one of the half reactions is Cl2 + 2e --> 2Cl-. Im petty confident this is a reduction reaction because Cl gains electrons but the answer key says Cl2 is the oxidizing agent. Can someone explain?

You are right! Cl2 is undergoing reduction. The definition of an oxidizing agent is the compound undergoing reduction. If you are being reduced, you are helping the other species get oxidized; thus you are the oxidizing agent.

Being reduced = being the oxidizing agent
Being oxidized = being the reducing agent
