Balancing Reaction Acidic and Basic

Postby Tara Ostad 1H » Sat Feb 11, 2017 3:09 pm

I was wondering if we need to know how to balance redox reactions acidicly and basically (like adding H+ and -OH) for the midterm. It was not covered in class but it is mentioned in the book.

Yes you need to know this.
One way to this is to firstly write down the balanced reaction regardless of pH value. And consider if all the reactants and products can survive in this pH value. If yes, that should be the correct reaction. If not, change that reactant or product to the correct form in current enviroment(eg. H+ exists in the form of water in basic environment) and add species required to balance the equation on the other side(OH-).
