Midterm 2015 #8C

Postby Michelle_Nguyen_3F » Sat Feb 11, 2017 9:31 pm

In 2003 researchers developed a microbial fuel cell. In this fuel cell, bacteria generates electricity as it aerobically converts glucose into carbon dioxide and water:

The balanced chemical reaction of glucose oxidation.

C. Assuming the carbon atoms in close have zero oxidation state whereas each H is +1, and each O -2, how many electrons are involved in glucose oxidation?

How do we solve for this? Thank you!

1. Calculate oxidation state of C in C6H12O6 and CO2, which are 0 and 4, respectively.
2.Oxidation state of C changes from 0 to 4, 6 carbons involved
3. Oxidation state of O changes from 0 to -2, 12 oxygens involved.
4. Total eletron transferred: 4*6=2*12=24 electrons
