Anode vs cathode

Is the anode always the side of the oxidation half-reaction and the cathode, the side with the reduction half reaction?

Yes, that is true. The anode is always the oxidation half reaction and the cathode corresponds to the reduction half reaction.

I believe you are right. In a galvanic cell, the anode side is the oxidized side, as electrons flow out towards the cathode, or reduced, side. Therefore you would be right; the oxidation half reaction would be the anode side and the reduced half reaction would be the cathode side.

Also, the anode, oxidation half reaction, is always on the left, while the cathode, reduction half reaction, is always on the right.

An easy way to remember this is with "AN OX" (anode/oxidation), "RED CAT" (reduction/cathode)

You are correct. The anode is the oxidation side as it loses electrons, while the cathode is the reduction side as it releases electrons.

Side note: an easy way to remember that oxidation is the loss of e- and reduction is gain of e-, use OIL RIG. OIL = Oxidation Is Loss, RIG = Reduction Is Gain
