Balancing redox rxns
When you are given a redox reaction to balance, is there a general set of steps you can use to do it? What do you balance first, second, etc?

I don't think there is an exact set of steps to follow. You should just balance it however you feel comfortable.

Re: Balancing redox rxns
You just need to balance it so that the electrons that are transferred cancel out between the two half reactions.

I don't know if this is of any help, but I start by identifying the two half-reactions and identifying the difference in electrons, then I balance it as if I were using hess's law.
