Basic vs Acidic Conditions

Postby Vanessa Romero-Campos 2B » Sat Feb 17, 2018 12:08 am

Is there a way to tell whether we should balance an equation under acidic conditions as opposed to basic conditions, without it being explicitly stated in the directions?

Are the ways in which one balances a redox reaction in acidic conditions different from the way one balances one in a basic condition? If so, how?

I think the only difference is having to add OH- to each side to balance the H+. Then the OH- and H+ on one side of the reaction can be added to form water and then cancel out the common terms on each side
