Acidic and Basic Solution

How do we know if the redox reaction is occuring in acidic or basic solution?

Its usually in acidic conditions, as many modern batteries are in acidic solutions. If it were in basic conditions it would state so.

The problem will usually specify, but it's more often in acidic solutions than basic solutions.
