The purpose of a salt bridge is to maintain a change balance, since electrons are moving from one side to another. Without the salt bridge, electron transfer from one "reaction beaker" to another will stop due to charge buildup. Adding a salt bridge (or a porous disk) will help the solution stay electrically neutral.

Is the salt bridge the same thing as a porous disk?

I believe they have the same function, but the shapes of them are what differ.

Usually questions specify whether a salt bridge or porous disk is being used, so i dont think we have to worry about it.
They basically do the same thing
