Water in Redox Reactions

Postby Rebecca Altshuler 1D » Mon Feb 25, 2019 3:41 pm

Does anyone know how we know when to add water to balance our redox reaction? How do we know how much to add?

We add water in acidic solutions. The amount of the moles depend on how much oxygens in the reactant side. Balance the reactants with the corresponding number of hydrogens from water.

Don't we add water to basic solutions too?

Yes, we add water to basic solutions to balance out the oxygen as well. The difference with basic solutions is that you add the same amount of OH- as there are H+ to both sides of the reaction.
