redox homework question

Postby Maayan Epstein 14B » Tue Feb 26, 2019 3:53 pm

Hi, in homework question 14.1 in the 6th edition, I am supposed to name the elements that undergo either oxidation or reduction. The answer solution does not include oxygen in it, even though it is oxidized. Can someone explain?
H+ (aq) +cr2o7^2- (aq) +c2H5OH (aq) --> Cr^3+ (aq) + C2H4OH (aq) + H2O (l)

are you sure that oxygen got oxidized? I thought that it remained the same (-2) on both sides.

Oxygen isn't in peroxide form anywhere nor is it in O2 form anywhere so it's oxidation number remains at -2. Cr goes from 6+ to 3+ so it is reduced and I think there's a typo in what you wrote, but I remember seeing this problem and Carbon is oxidized.

Oxygen is not being oxidized here. It remains (-2) on both sides. Carbon is being oxidized here.
