How do we know if a redox reaction is acidic or basic if no H+ or OH- is given?

Usually, the problem will say that the reaction occurs in an acidic or basic solution if no H+ or OH- is already in the equation.

Yes, If the question doesn't specify if the solution is in an acidic or basic solution, than it is pretty safe to assume there will be no H+ or OH- in your equation. Only if it says that the solution is in an acidic or basic solution will you need to add H+ or OH-. Usually, you can deduce this by seeing that the amount of oxygen on both sides of a rxn don't match when charges are balanced, hence why you're supposed to balance amount of oxygen after all of the other elements.

In all the examples he has given, it says basic or acidic solution. Remember that if it is acidic, then you add H+ and H2O (if needed). If it's basic, you add OH- and H2O (if needed).

The problem will specify whether the reaction occurs in basic or acidic solution. Depending on where the reaction takes place you use OH or H20 to balance oxygen and hydrogen.

The question will tell you if the redox reaction is in an acidic or basic solution.
