Is the reason why potassium in potassium permanganate and chloride in iron(iii) chloride not included in the balanced redox reaction because they are spectator ions?

You are exactly right! They are not participating in the reaction, so they do not need to be included.

Hi, I'm a little confused.. how do we know that they are spectator ions? What gives that away?
