Adding H+ and H2O

Postby VivianaHF2L » Thu Feb 28, 2019 10:41 pm

Just to clarify, when balancing an equation one must add H+ or water but never put coefficients in front of the oxidizing/reducing compound. OR can we do both?

You can do both. Both are needed to balance reactions.

Also, remember that you add H+ and H2O when the redox reaction occurs in a acidic solution. If it takes place is a basic solution, you use OH- and H2O to balance the redox reaction.

You must balance the elements other than oxygen and hydrogen first. Thus, you can do both.

Adding water balances the oxygens and H+ balances the hydrogens

To balance H+ in a basic solution, add one molecule of H20 per every H+ you need. Then, add that same number of OH- on the opposite side.

you add both in order to balance the Hs and Os on each side of the reaction

when doing redox reactions it is most important to make sure the equation is balanced. First balance the important element. Then balance oxygens with H2O. and depending on if it is in an acidic or basic solution, balance hydrogens with H+ or H+ and OH-. you may put coefficients in front of everything

For an acidic solution, balance oxygen with water molecules and balance hydrogen with H+. For a basic solution, balance oxygen with water molecules, and balance the hydrogen from those water molecules with water molecules on the other side of the equation. Then, balance oxygen with OH- on the first side of the equation.

Wait do you put the OH- on the same or opposite side of H+?

remember that acidic and basic solutions, you add different molecules!!!

Hi, you put the OH- on the same side as the H+ because OH- + H+ -> H2O. Hope that helps!

for a acidic solution you should begin by balancing the non hydrogen and oxygen elements. Once you have done this you should balance the oxygen by adding H2O to the side that is lacking oxygen. Then you would add H+ to the other side to balance the number of hydrogen molecules.

Both steps are needed to balance the reaction.
