Half reactions
In lecture, a redox reaction was separated into half reactions. What are half reactions and how are they separated?

Re: Half reactions
Half reactions separate the oxidation and the reduction reactions that occur in a redox reaction. You can use it to find out which elements are oxidized and reduced, and also balance redox reactions (since the number of electrons transferred should cancel out in the two half reactions combined.

Re: Half reactions
One half reaction is the oxidation reaction, and one half reaction is the reduction reaction. Whatever is losing electrons would be in the oxidation reaction, and whatever is gaining electrons would be in the reduction reaction.

When balancing redox reactions, are we balancing the number of atoms or electrons?

Re: Half reactions
A way of identifying redox reactions is : The LEO goes GER.
LEO: Lose Electrons Oxidation
GER: Gain Electrons Reduction
LEO: Lose Electrons Oxidation
GER: Gain Electrons Reduction

GER: Gain Electrons Reduction
there's also OIL RIG, which is:
Oxidation Is Loss= OIL
Reduction Is Gain= RIG
which is referring to loss/gain of electrons

Re: Half reactions
Half reactions are the two reactions involved in a redox reaction, oxidation and reduction. Oxidation is the reaction involving a loss of electrons; reduction is the reaction involving a gain of electrons.
