Memorizing charges

Will we have to memorize all of the charges of all of the elements, or just the ones that are in the most common groups (such as Groups 1, 2, 16, 17, etc.)? Is the only way to tell the charge of transition metals by seeing the whole compound the element is in?

For transitional metals, the oxidation states usually vary, so for those I would just go off the compound given. However, it would be a good idea to remember some patterns like columns 1 (+1),2 (+2),16 (-2), and 17 (-1).

We should just know the patterns of group 1 being 1+ group 2 +2 and 17 being -1 and 16 -2.

I'm pretty sure that we only need to know the really common ones that we also use as examples and in homework problems. Only the ones that are constantly repeated will have to be memorized most likely.

I think we would be expected to memorize the charges that appear most on the homework and any Lavelle includes during his lectures.

When it comes to memorizing charges I think it would be safe to memorize the most common elements that he commonly uses for in class example or homework questions.

I think we should know the ones in groups 1,2,16,17 and any common ones we talk about.

The common ones I would definitely have locked down are O which is 2-, H which is 1+, F which is 1-. Elements by themselves (ex. diatomic molecules like Cl2) are 0.
