Seperating Redoz RXNS
It was said that it is easier to separate a redox reaction into half reactions but what does half reactions mean? Are reactions just cut in half?

I think he meant half reactions by separating the red/ox into reduced and oxidized parts. This means that you show which reactants in the rxn become reduced or oxidized in 2 different pieces.

Half reactions separate the oxidation and the reduction reactions into two half reactions. You can use the individual two half reactions to find out which elements are oxidized and reduced, and also balance redox reactions (since the number of electrons transferred should end up cancelling out.

By half reactions, Lavelle simply means to separate the oxidation reaction and the reduction reaction to balance one half reaction first, keep track of electrons exchanged and piece it back together with the other half reaction to fully balance the reaction.

2 half reactions added together equal the main reaction. It is just a way to show in detail where the e- go

Re: Seperating Redoz RXNS
Half reactions don't necessarily mean the reaction is split in half exactly. Oxidation and reduction reactions are two halves of a redox reaction. So, when you're breaking the reaction up, you're breaking the redox reaction into one oxidation and one reduction reaction.

Half reactions just show the transfer of electrons in oxidation and reduction. Two half reactions, or an oxidation coupled with a reduction, equals the full reaction.

By separating the redox reactions, this means that the oxidation half is separated from the reduction half
