Balancing Basic Solutions

For a basic solution, why do we balance H by adding H20 to one side and OH- to the other?

To balance a half reaction we would normally add H20 first to balance the number of oxygen atoms on both sides of the half reaction. Since we added H20, there is now an imbalance of H's, so we would add the number of H20 molecules on the opposite side per H atom needed. Since there are twice as many H atoms in H20 than there are per H, we would also have to add the same number of OH molecules to the opposite side of which we just added the H2O's (the second time) to balance the number of H's as well as new O's. Remember for basic solutions, OH is produced and in greater concentration than H+

You would start balancing the Oxygen atoms by adding H2O on one side, but then you need to balance the Hydrogens. For basic solutions, there is a surplus of OH- compared to H+ in acidic solutions, so you would then add OH- to balance the Hydrogens.
