oxidizing and reducing agents

Postby Jasmine W 1K » Thu Feb 20, 2020 5:46 pm

For this reaction, would Cl2 be both the oxidizing and reducing agent?

Reaction of chlorine in water:
Cl 2 (g) --> HClO(aq) + Cl-

I believe so because one of the Cls are involved in the HClO reaction, which increases the oxidation number from 0 to +1, and the other Cl is involved in the Cl- reaction, which decreases the oxidation number from 0 to -1.

Yes in this case Cl2 would be both the oxidizing and reducing agent. One half reaction involves the reduction of Cl to Cl- and the other half reaction involves the oxidation of Cl2 to HClO.

I think so because Cl is being both oxidized and reduced
