Which equation do we flip?

Postby MaryBanh_2K » Tue Feb 25, 2020 9:13 am

When you balance redox reactions and you end up with the same amount of added electrons on the same side, how do you know which equation to flip to cancel out the electrons? Do we flip the anode or the cathode or is it dependent on the E value of each?

If it is a galvanic cell, you flip the equation that will render you a positive Ecell value.

You flip the side that is being oxidized.

If given the reductions, the one with the higher value, therefore, it wants to be reduced and serves as the reduction. This means that the other equation serves as the oxidation reaction which will then be flipped.

You flip the equation that is being oxidized. For a galvanic cell, the E has to be positive, so whichever will make it positive.

If it is a spontaneous galvanic cell, flip whichever equation will give you a positive Ecell. If they say it is non spontaneous, or the batter is dead, make the Ecell negative.

You should flip the reaction that makes the standard reduction potential of the overall cell positive.
