Acidic vs basic solution

How can you tell if a reaction is taking place in a basic or acidic solution if the question doesn't tell you?

The question will usually specify which one it is. I have seen some questions where they will tell you the pH too and you can determine yourself how to balance the equation based on the pH.

The homework problems from section 6K specified whether it was in an acidic or basic solution, so it will be provided.
