for balancing an oxidation half reaction in an acidic solution, do you add H3O+ on the right side? or H+?
In my discussion my TA used H3O+ but the textbook uses H+....

Re: balancing in acidic solutions
H+ and H3O+ are essentially the same thing so you could theoretically use them interchangeably. However, since H3O+ is more useful for when we are dealing with proton transfer, H+ would be the more efficient one to use.

For an acidic solution (which are much easier to undersand IMO) we'd use H+ to balance out the charges and OH- for redox reactions in a basic solution.

Re: balancing in acidic solutions
Either H+ or H3O+ would work in balancing acidic solutions. You would use OH- when trying to balance basic solutions however.
