Textbook Question 6K.3

Postby Morgan Carrington 2H » Wed Feb 26, 2020 8:52 pm

Balance each of the following skeletal equations by using oxidation and reduction half-reactions. All the reactions take place in acidic solution. Identify the oxidizing agent and reducing agent in each reaction.

(a) Reaction of thiosulfate ion with chlorine gas

The answer key says that the oxidizing agent is Cl2 and the reducing agent is S2O3, but I did not get those answers. Are reducing and oxidizing agents different from the species that are actually being reduced or oxidized?

An oxidizing agent gains electrons and is reduced in a chemical reaction. A reducing agent, loses electrons and is oxidized in a chemical reaction.

the oxidizing agent is the one being reduced and the reducing agent is the one being oxidized.
since cl2 is gaining electrons it's being reduced and is the oxidizing agent
s2o3 is losing elections and being oxidized, so it's the reducing agent
