What are the steps we should follow for balancing complicated redox reactions?

I've learned you balance in order of...

Acidic: any element besides O and H, balance O by adding H2O, balance H by adding H+, add electrons to appropriate side

Basic: any element besides O and H, balance O by adding H2O, balance H by adding H+, add the same number of OH- (as you did H+ in the previous step) to each side of reaction, add electrons to appropriate side
(redox reactions in basic solutions take an extra step)

Stop to check balance of the half-reactions, making sure both sides have the same charge (it helps to do this frequently).

Lastly, ensure that the same amount of electrons are present in both the reduction and oxidation reactions. If not, scale the equations accordingly. Hope this helps!
