Oxidizing/reducing agent

Postby AlyssaYeh_1B » Sat Feb 29, 2020 4:24 pm

What is meant by the terms 'oxidizing agent' and 'reducing agent'?

An oxidizing agent is a substance that gets reduced, while a reducing agent is a substance that gets oxidized. For example, let's say we have substance A (reducing agent) and substance B (oxidizing agent). An easier way of conceptualizing this would be to think that substance A needs to give away its electron and thus would reduce substance B. Reducing substance B would oxidize substance A.

An oxidizing agent is one that causes a substance to be oxidized (meaning that the oxidizing agent is reduced).

The reducing agent causes a substance (the other element/molecule in the reaction) to be reduced (so the reducing agent is oxidized).

An oxidizing agent, or oxidant, gains electrons and is reduced in a chemical reaction and vice versa.

An oxidizing agent is one that oxidizes and thereby gets reduced.

A reducing agent is one that reduces and thereby gets oxidized.

Oxidizing agents are what's being reduced thereby gaining electrons where vice versa, reducing agents are what's being oxidized thereby losing electrons.

The one being oxidized is the reducing agent because it causes the other to become reduced and vice versa

An oxidizing agent is stronger oxidizing than its redox couple and will undergo reduction itself. A reducing agent is more stronger reducing than its redox couple and will undergo oxidation itself.

An oxidizing agent is being reduced and the reducing agent is being oxidized.

I think of it in terms of opposites, so whatever is being oxidized acts as the reducing agent and whatever is being reduced acts as the oxidizing agent.

the oxidizing agent is being reduced because it is recieving the e- from reduction process, and the reducing agent is being oxidized because it is giving e- for the reduction process.

An oxidizing agent refers to the item being reduced, which allows for the other species to be oxidized. A reducing agent is exactly the opposite: it is being oxidized in order for another species to be reduced.

An oxidizing agent allows its counterpart in the equation to be oxidized (oxidizing agent=reduced component), and a reducing agent allows its counterpart in the equation to be reduced (reducing agent=oxidized counterpart).

An oxidizing agent is the thing being reduced, and a reducing agent is the thing being oxidized. I just remember it as the reverse since it can get a little confusing at times.

oxidizing agents = the ones carrying out the oxidation. and then same with reduction agents

Why is the oxidizing agent being reduced and not oxidized?

The oxidizing agent is what is causing something else to be oxidized. So, it itself will be reduced in order for this to happen. The same is true for the reducing agent.
