If not given which is which, we can tell through whether half-reaction is reduced or oxidized. This can be told through the greater electric standard potential of the reaction, the greater or more positive standard electric potential is the reduction reaction and the other is the oxidation reaction. The reduction reactions take place at the cathode and the oxidation reactions take place at the anode.
well in a cell diagram a cathode is termed to be to the right and an anode is termed to be to the left of a cell diagram, well usually. Best way to determine which reactions belongs where is to know that in the cathode reduction half reaction takes place and in an anode a roxidation half reaction takes place.

If not told, you can figure out which is which by calculating what would make the overall cell potential positive. You could find the individual cell potentials for each half reaction, and then determine which would make E(cathode) - E(anode) a positive value.
