oxidizing agents

Postby 205389184 » Sun Mar 01, 2020 7:28 pm

How come the oxidizing agents are the opposite of what is being oxidized? and the same for the reduction agents

The oxidizing agent is the substance that causes oxidation in another substance. The same is true for reducing agents.

The terminology here appears flipped because of the meaning of the word agent. In general, an agent is a thing that brings about an action. In the case of redox reactions, a reducing agent is the atom or molecule that brings about the oxidization of another, while an oxidizing agent is the atom or molecule that brings about the reduction of another.

The agents are what cause the oxidation or reduction so it will be, by definition, the opposite.

the oxidizing agent gets reduced and the reducing agent gets oxidized

An Oxidizing agent does the oxidizing, so it allows the other side to become oxidized, and vice versa.

Oxidizing agents cause Oxidation to a substance and get reduced in the process.

The oxidizing agent means that it is oxidizing the thing, it causes the oxidization

The oxidation agent causes another substance to be oxidized and in the reaction the oxidizing agent is being reduced.

I like to think of it as, the oxidizing agents carry out the oxidation, and same with reduction

The oxidation agent causes another substance to be oxidized, which is why the oxidizing agent is different from what's being oxidized

The oxidizing agent has the ability to oxidize and is itself reduced. The reducing agent reduces and is itself oxidized.
