Balancing half reactions in acidic conditions

Postby Jessica Booth 2F » Mon Mar 02, 2020 7:26 pm

For a redox reaction in an acidic half-reaction, do we use H3O+ or just H+ to balance the hydrogens?

I believe you use H+ only, since H2O is used to balance oxygen.

When asked to provide half-reactions should you include electrons in transit or wait until the final balanced equation addition to do so?

You would use H+. Using H30+ would add more H's and an additional O to balance

When balancing in an acidic solution, I believe you use H+ and H2O. In a basic solution, you use OH- and H2O.

Use H2O to balance the Os first and then use H+ to balance the H. if you used H30+ to balance the H then you would once again add Os to the other side.

You would just use H+ for acidic conditions.

I think just use H+ because H3O+ has more elements to balance in the overall equation

You would use H+ to balance out the hydrogens.
